Thane Gorek

Thane is a painter whose work explores the transcendental beauty of natural and imagined landscapes, capturing their essence with vivid colors, rich textures, and stylized forms. Based in Colorado, Thane’s artistic journey began at the age of 11, when he started taking private lessons with a college professor, and has since evolved through years of formal training and exploration. After earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1995, Thane honed his craft while drawing inspiration from a range of influences—from early illustrators like Ralph Steadman and Dave McKean, to the surreal worlds of H.R. Giger and Remedios Varo, to the landscapes of Caspar David Friedrich and Eyvind Earle.

While Thane initially focused on illustration, the allure of landscape painting took center stage years later, leading to a deeper exploration of texture and a dedication to creating atmospheres that resonate with viewers on a spiritual level. Working primarily in oils, the slow drying time and versatile nature of the medium allow for layered depth and intricate detail. Colorado's rugged beauty, particularly its aspen groves and pine forests, has been a constant muse for his work, prompting experimentation with different textures and larger-scale compositions.

In the studio, Thane approaches his craft with discipline, balancing careful planning with intuitive decision-making as each painting evolves. His process is methodical yet fluid, with each piece telling a unique story as it unfolds. For Thane, the most rewarding aspect of painting comes when the work is complete, signed, and framed, ready to connect with its new home.

Looking to the future, Thane plans to continue pushing the boundaries of their practice, exploring new techniques, textures, and abstract elements, while also expanding into larger formats. With each piece, their ultimate goal is to evoke emotion and spark conversation, inviting the viewer to connect with the work on a personal level.
